Allergies

Allergy runs in families and rose too fast for genes to explain. Both of those are true, and holding them together is the whole subject.

Why this topic Pollen seasons are lengthening, school food policy is a public argument, and the first drugs for food allergy have arrived.

2026-04-05 · Chen E et al., combining Global Biobank Meta-analysis Initiative and Million Veteran Program data (over 158,000 asthma cases, 1.6 million+ controls)

Deep learning and statistical methods identify novel asthma risk variants in Europeans

A meta-analysis combining the Global Biobank Meta-analysis Initiative and the Million Veteran Program (over 158,000 asthma cases, 1.6 million+ controls) used deep learning -- a Transformer-based framework called InsightGWAS -- alongside standard statistical methods to find 69 previously unreported genome-wide significant loci for asthma risk, one of the largest asthma genetics studies to date. The paper's scale, not a small number of headline genes, is the finding: functional follow-up implicated genes across immune regulation, airway remodeling and metabolic processes.

2026-09-01 · Rodríguez-Alcolado L et al., 628 Spanish EoE patients, 38 genetic markers

In 628 patients, CAPN14 variants tracked with eosinophil counts and which allergic conditions came along with eosinophilic esophagitis

A study of 628 Spanish patients with eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE) genotyped 38 markers and found variants that predicted disease phenotype and eosinophil levels, plus links between certain variants and higher asthma/conjunctivitis risk or lower dermatitis risk -- two specific CAPN14 genotypes tracked with lower peak eosinophil counts at diagnosis. See this site's eosinophilic esophagitis page, which carries a different CAPN14 variant from the original discovery GWAS.

How this was counted

Europe PMC, title and abstract only, searched for “allergic rhinitis”, “atopic dermatitis”, “food allergy”, “allergic sensitization” alongside each published rsID. Full text was not counted: it returns every paper with an rsID buried in a supplementary table. Recounted monthly.

Questions about Allergies

What are Allergies?

Allergies is this site's topic page for allergic-disease genetics — built around one tension: allergy runs in families, and it also rose too fast in recent decades for genes alone to explain.

Are allergies genetic?

Yes, and no, at once. Allergy runs in families, which points to real inherited risk, but rates rose too fast for genes to explain that rise on their own — holding both facts together is the whole subject of this page.

Why are allergies a topic on this site now?

Pollen seasons are lengthening, school food policy is a live public argument, and the first drugs for food allergy have arrived — all at once.

How does this site decide which variants are linked to allergies?

Europe PMC is searched for allergic rhinitis, atopic dermatitis, food allergy or allergic sensitization appearing in a paper's title or abstract alongside a published rsID, recounted every month.
