The MyGeneLog™ app is free, and stays free. No purchase, no license key, no account, no signup. Reading this site is free, and the reference data is published under an open license.
If we ever offer something additional alongside that — a bulk export, a dated Gene Knowledge Graph Snapshot, a notification feed — it will be additional. Nothing that is free today stops being free because something new is offered next to it. That is the commitment worth making, and it is the one we make.
Not medical advice, ever. Nothing on this site, in the app, or in any output either produces — the reports, the API responses, a condition page, a variant page — diagnoses a condition, predicts your future health, or recommends a treatment. It is general, research-derived information about published genetic associations. It does not know your medical history, is not a substitute for a doctor or a licensed genetic counselor, and must not be used as the basis for a medical decision by you, on your behalf, or about anyone else, without a qualified professional's involvement.
MyGeneLog™ (the "Software") is a desktop application distributed by narubox™ that parses a genome file you provide (VCF, or a 23andMe/AncestryDNA raw export) and matches it against a reference dataset of published genetic findings. It runs entirely on the user's machine and does not upload the genome file or any analysis result anywhere.
MyGeneLog™ is informational only. It does not diagnose any medical condition, does not predict when a condition will occur, and does not recommend medication or treatment. It is not a substitute for advice from a doctor or a licensed genetic counselor.
narubox™ grants you a free, perpetual, non-exclusive license to install and use the Software, on any number of machines, for your own use. No purchase or activation step is required.
Sections 1 and 2 are about the Software. This site (mygenelog.com) and its public JSON API are a separate thing, governed by this section and the rest of these Terms, and are provided free of charge and as-is, with no uptime guarantee — they run on one small server rather than a content network.
Which endpoints exist, and the rate limits on them, may change. We may also offer optional paid services alongside the free ones, such as bulk exports, dated Gene Knowledge Graph Snapshots for citation, or API Pro tiers with higher rate limits. Doing so does not withdraw anything already offered free.
Data already published under CC BY 4.0 remains under that license permanently. That grant is irrevocable by design and we would not want it otherwise: it is what lets researchers, developers and anyone else build on this without asking. What that license does not cover is stated in every API response — the written sections, and the links between variants, conditions and drugs, which stay ours. All other content on this site — trademarks, logos, the written prose on condition and topic pages, and site design — is owned by narubox™ or its licensors and is not covered by the CC BY 4.0 grant.
The one exception is the Updates section (mygenelog.com/updates): every article published there, in either language, is licensed under Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial 4.0 (CC BY-NC 4.0). You may copy, redistribute, and adapt an Updates article in any medium, including translating it, provided you (a) credit MyGeneLog™ with a link back to the original article and (b) do not use it, or anything adapted from it, for a commercial purpose. This is a narrower grant than the CC BY 4.0 data license above — attribution alone is not enough on its own for an Updates article the way it is for the underlying data; commercial use additionally requires our written permission. Nothing else on the site (condition, drug, topic, and variant pages; site design; the API's written sections) is covered by this or any other content license.
An account is required only for a paid subscription, a purchased snapshot, or the referral program — nothing about reading this site or the reference data requires one. Creating an account requires a working email address, either directly or via Google sign-in; we treat both the same way once created. You are responsible for keeping your credentials and your email inbox secure, for everything that happens under your account, and for telling us promptly (see Contact, below) if you believe it has been compromised. Accounts are for one person's own use; do not share credentials or create an account on behalf of someone else without their knowledge.
We may suspend or terminate an account that violates these Terms, is used to abuse the service (including circumventing rate limits or reselling access), or is inactive for an extended period, with notice to the email on file where practical.
Payments are processed by Stripe; we never see or store your card number. A subscription (such as API Pro) renews automatically at the interval and price shown at signup until you cancel it from your account or tell us to (see Contact); cancellation stops future renewals and does not retroactively refund the current period unless we say otherwise in writing. A Gene Knowledge Graph Snapshot is a one-time purchase that unlocks a specific dated file to the account that bought it and does not expire or need renewing. A donation is exactly that — voluntary, non-refundable, and not an exchange for any product or service. We may change prices for future billing periods or future purchases, with notice; a price you already paid does not change retroactively.
The Software does not collect telemetry, user analytics, or copies of your genome file or analysis results. Everything happens in memory on the user's machine and never leaves it — there is no upload step. The Software makes exactly two outbound calls, neither carrying user- or genome-identifying data: an optional version check against the public install repository, and a fetch of the public reference-data feed from mygenelog.com (used to recognize newly-added variants without an app update). What this website and API collect — account details, basic analytics, payment handling via Stripe — is described in full in the Privacy Policy, which is part of these Terms by reference.
You may not use the Software, this website, the API, or any information either surfaces, to make medical decisions without consulting a qualified professional, or to make decisions about a third party without their knowledge and consent. You remain solely responsible for how you use the information provided. You may not: scrape or bulk-download this site outside the documented API and its published rate limits; attempt to circumvent a rate limit, paywall, or access control; resell or redistribute a paid product (a snapshot, an API Pro key) as your own; use the service to build a tool that presents itself as a medical device, a diagnosis, or clinical advice; or use it for any unlawful purpose.
The Software may be decompiled or inspected for personal security-audit purposes. Redistribution of modified binaries is not permitted.
The Software, this website, and the API are each provided "as is" and "as available", without warranty of any kind, express or implied, including but not limited to the warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, accuracy, and noninfringement. We work to keep the reference data and the pages built on it accurate and current, and we correct errors when we find or are told about them, but we do not warrant that any of it is error-free, complete, or fit for any particular decision.
To the fullest extent permitted by law, narubox™, its founder, and its contributors will not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages, or any loss of data, health outcome, or decision made in reliance on the Software, this website, the API, or any content on it, even if advised of the possibility of such damages. Where liability cannot be excluded, it is limited to the greater of (a) the amount you paid us in the twelve months before the claim arose, or (b) one hundred US dollars. This limitation applies whether a claim is framed in contract, tort (including negligence), or any other legal theory, and applies to the fullest extent permitted in your jurisdiction.
You agree to indemnify and hold narubox™ and its founder harmless from any claim, damage, or expense (including reasonable legal fees) arising from your use of the Software, this website, or the API in violation of these Terms, or from a decision made about your own health or a third party's based on information from either, without appropriate professional involvement.
These Terms are governed by the laws of the State of Texas, USA, without regard to conflict-of-law principles. Before filing a claim, you agree to contact us (see Contact, below) and give us 30 days to resolve it informally. Any dispute that cannot be resolved informally will be brought exclusively in the state or federal courts located in Travis County, Texas, and you consent to that jurisdiction and venue.
If any part of these Terms is found unenforceable, the rest remains in effect. These Terms, together with the Privacy Policy, are the entire agreement between you and narubox™ regarding the Software, this website, and the API, and supersede any earlier understanding on the same subject.
narubox™ may update these Terms for future versions of the Software. Changes apply only to versions released after the Effective date above; the Terms that shipped with your version remain in force for that version — a copy of the app you already have cannot have its terms changed underneath it.
The website, API, and account terms in sections 3–13 may be updated as the service changes, with the current version always at this address and the Effective date at the top of this page reflecting the latest revision. Continued use of the website or API after a change takes effect means you accept the revised Terms. What cannot be changed retroactively: the perpetual license to a copy of the Software you already hold, and any data already published under CC BY 4.0.
