What the study found

Who was studied 8,130 European ancestry cases, 38,987 European ancestry controls; replicated in Up to 34,412 European ancestry cases, 59,925 European ancestry controls.

The effect Each copy of the A allele carried 1.13 times the odds of Type 2 diabetes (95% confidence interval 1.09-1.18); p = 3 × 10−9.

Where it sits Chromosome 7, band 7p15.1 — in an intron of JAZF1.

What each result means

A/A Two copies of the version the research linked to Type 2 diabetes. That is the strongest link of the three results. A link in a study is not a diagnosis.
A/G One copy of the version the research linked to Type 2 diabetes. That is a smaller link than two copies.
G/G No copy of the version the research linked to Type 2 diabetes. This is the starting point the study compared everyone against.

Multi-ancestry, trans-generational GWAS meta-analysis of gestational diabetes and glycaemic traits during pregnancy reveals limited evidence of pregnancy-specific genetic effects

Gestational diabetes affects about 14% of pregnancies and raises the mother's later risk of type 2 diabetes. The GenDiP Consortium's meta-analysis covers up to 38,305 women with gestational diabetes and 776,145 controls and finds 37 associated loci, 7 of them new, plus five new loci for blood sugar traits in pregnancy — all acting through the mother's genome rather than the baby's. Every locus overlaps type 2 diabetes or glycaemic traits outside pregnancy, which is the 'limited evidence' of the title; but 12 variants have stronger effects in gestational diabetes than in type 2 diabetes, four loci (G6PC2, CAST-PCSK1, HKDC1, FOXA2) have no genome-wide-significant type 2 diabetes association, GCK shows distinct causal variants, and MTNR1B's effect is amplified in pregnancy. Seven of the study's positions are on this site under other traits, including rs560887 (G6PC2), rs11558471 (SLC30A8), rs849134 (JAZF1) and rs4665972 (GCKR). It sits beside this site's gestational diabetes page, which is built on a separate 2026 study. PMID:42225636.

Questions about rs849134

What is rs849134?

rs849134 is a single position in the genome, in or near the JAZF1 gene. Published research associates it with type 2 diabetes. A single variant does not decide an outcome — it shifts a probability, and for most common variants the shift is small.

What conditions is rs849134 linked to?

On MyGeneLog this position is linked to Type 2 Diabetes. The research behind each link, and its sources, are set out on that condition page.

What do people read about alongside rs849134?

Subjects that appear in the title or abstract of the same papers as this rsID include blood sugar and insulin (1 papers). A shared paper means somebody wrote about the two together; it is not a claim that this position explains the topic.

Does having rs849134 mean I will get this?

No. Common variants like this one move a probability slightly and, on their own, rarely decide anything about one person. Nothing on this page is a diagnosis, and health decisions should be made with a clinician who can see your whole picture.

Where does the information about rs849134 come from?

GWAS Catalog, Nat Genet 2010, PMID:20581827. Every variant on MyGeneLog comes from public primary sources and is published with its citation and the date it was checked.
