Where this position leads
Condition: Alzheimer's Disease
What the study found
Who was studied 56,184 European ancestry cases, 90,919 European ancestry controls.
The effect Each copy of the A allele carried 0.90 times the odds of Alzheimer's disease (95% confidence interval 0.89-0.92); p = 6 × 10−32.
How common The A allele had a frequency of about 36% in the people studied.
Where it sits Chromosome 11, band 11q12.2 — a missense change in MS4A6A.

Nine research consortia pooled their European-ancestry studies: 128,681 cases or proxy cases of Alzheimer's disease and related dementias and 849,833 controls. The analysis identified 91 loci, 16 of them new; 56 were detected specifically in clinically diagnosed Alzheimer's disease, and a further 18 are listed as needing outside validation. A polygenic score built from the loci other than APOE went with Alzheimer's pathology rather than other kinds: people in the top tenth of the score had about twice the risk of advanced tangle and plaque pathology at death, compared with people in the middle of the range. 69 of the study's positions are already on this site, 59 of them on the Alzheimer's disease page, including rs429358 (APOE), rs7232 (MS4A6A) and rs17462136 (CASS4). PMID:42237039.
rs7232 is a single position in the genome, in or near the MS4A6A gene. Published research associates it with alzheimer's disease. A single variant does not decide an outcome — it shifts a probability, and for most common variants the shift is small.
On MyGeneLog this position is linked to Alzheimer's Disease. The research behind each link, and its sources, are set out on that condition page.
No. Common variants like this one move a probability slightly and, on their own, rarely decide anything about one person. Nothing on this page is a diagnosis, and health decisions should be made with a clinician who can see your whole picture.
