What the study found

Who was studied 256,822 European, African, Hispanic or Latin American and Asian ancestry cases, 1,372,501 European, African, Hispanic or Latin American and Asian ancestry controls.

The effect Each copy of the A allele carried 1.07 times the odds of ICD10 B35: Dermatophytosis (95% confidence interval 1.0599-1.0766); p = 7 × 10−79.

How common The A allele had a frequency of about 41% in the people studied.

Where it sits Chromosome 16, band 16p11.2 — a missense change in ZNF646.

What each result means

A/A Two copies of the version the research linked to ICD10 B35: Dermatophytosis. That is the strongest link of the three results. A link in a study is not a diagnosis.
A/G One copy of the version the research linked to ICD10 B35: Dermatophytosis. That is a smaller link than two copies.
G/G No copy of the version the research linked to ICD10 B35: Dermatophytosis. This is the starting point the study compared everyone against.

Fungal skin infection runs partly in the genes — and through obesity genes

Dermatophytosis — the fungal infection behind athlete's foot, nail fungus and ringworm — affects around 20% of the world's population. A genome-wide meta-analysis of over 250,000 cases from FinnGen, the Estonian Biobank, UK Biobank and the Million Veteran Program found 30 genome-wide significant loci, with top signals near ZNF646, HLA-DQB1, FLG, FTO, SLURP2 and KRT77, and pointed to keratin biology, the skin barrier, immune function and obesity. 19 of the study's positions already have pages here, including rs1421085 in FTO, the best-known obesity position, and five on the dermatophytosis page. PMID:41792138.

Questions about rs7196726

What is rs7196726?

rs7196726 is a single position in the genome, in or near the ZNF646 gene. Published research associates it with icd10 b35: dermatophytosis. A single variant does not decide an outcome — it shifts a probability, and for most common variants the shift is small.

What conditions is rs7196726 linked to?

On MyGeneLog this position is linked to Dermatophytosis. The research behind each link, and its sources, are set out on that condition page.

Does having rs7196726 mean I will get this?

No. Common variants like this one move a probability slightly and, on their own, rarely decide anything about one person. Nothing on this page is a diagnosis, and health decisions should be made with a clinician who can see your whole picture.

Where does the information about rs7196726 come from?

GWAS Catalog, Nature communications 2026, PMID:41792138. Every variant on MyGeneLog comes from public primary sources and is published with its citation and the date it was checked.
