Urinary monomethylated arsenic species percentage

FMO3 · rs12406572

What the study found

Who was studied 6,540 Bangladeshi ancestry individuals.

The effect Each copy of the A allele shifted the measure 1.3 percentage points lower; p = 3 × 10−16.

How common The A allele had a frequency of about 6% in the people studied.

Where it sits Chromosome 1, band 1q24.3 — in an intron of FMO3.

What each result means

A/A Two copies of the version the research linked to Urinary monomethylated arsenic species percentage. That is the strongest link of the three results. A link in a study is not a diagnosis.
A/C One copy of the version the research linked to Urinary monomethylated arsenic species percentage. That is a smaller link than two copies.
C/C No copy of the version the research linked to Urinary monomethylated arsenic species percentage. This is the starting point the study compared everyone against.

Arsenic in drinking water: new genes that change how the body clears it

In Bangladesh more than fifty million people are chronically exposed to arsenic through their drinking water. How well a person breaks arsenic down was already known to depend on the AS3MT and FTCD gene regions; this study of urine from 6,540 people and blood from 976 found new signals in the FMO gene cluster, led by FMO3 and FMO4, and in GSTO1. The new positions did not show a clear association with arsenic-induced skin lesions. Four of the study's positions have pages here, including rs12406572 in FMO3 and rs34521730 in GSTO1. PMID:40892834.

Questions about rs12406572

What is rs12406572?

rs12406572 is a single position in the genome, in or near the FMO3 gene. Published research associates it with urinary monomethylated arsenic species percentage. A single variant does not decide an outcome — it shifts a probability, and for most common variants the shift is small.

Does having rs12406572 mean I will get this?

No. Common variants like this one move a probability slightly and, on their own, rarely decide anything about one person. Nothing on this page is a diagnosis, and health decisions should be made with a clinician who can see your whole picture.

Where does the information about rs12406572 come from?

GWAS Catalog, PLoS genetics 2025, PMID:40892834. Every variant on MyGeneLog comes from public primary sources and is published with its citation and the date it was checked.
