Lessons that are free to use in any classroom, new research, changes to the dataset, plain-language explainers, and the real genetics behind things you already know. Every entry says which subject it belongs to and what you need to know before reading it. Medical information goes stale, so entries are revised when the evidence moves — revised entries show their update date, not just the day they were first published. Every article here is CC BY-NC 4.0 licensed — free to share and adapt with credit, not for commercial use (details).

A dark card reading "a healthy person, a normal result, and a range built on somebody else." — the cover for a free classroom lesson on population data and whether a genetic finding transfers.

Lesson: when genetic findings don't apply to other populations

GeneticsStatisticsSocial studiesHealth Age 16+ Intermediate PDF

A free lesson on reading data critically, using this site as the dataset. The class computes the same prediction in five populations and measures how wrong it gets — six points for one variant, fifty-two for another. Then we publish our own audit: 72.2% of the variants here were discovered in entirely European samples.

A dark card reading "run enough tests and nothing becomes something." — the cover for a free classroom lesson on p-values and the multiple testing problem.

Lesson: p-values, and why genetics uses 0.00000005

StatisticsMathematicsGenetics Age 16+ Advanced PDF

A free statistics lesson with one coin per student. The class runs six hundred studies of something that is definitely not happening, gets about thirty-eight discoveries, and works out from there why genetics needs a p-value of 0.00000005 rather than 0.05.

A dark card reading "your calculation will be wrong. that is the lesson." — the cover for a free classroom genetics lesson on lactase persistence.

Lesson: lactose tolerance and natural selection

BiologyGeneticsStatisticsSocial studies Age 13+ Intermediate PDF

A free genetics lesson on natural selection, with no equipment needed. The class computes a prediction from real allele frequencies, gets a clean answer, and then finds out it is wrong — because the same solution evolved four separate times in the last few thousand years.

A strip of paper on a dark background with the words "some of you will taste nothing" — the cover for a free classroom genetics lesson.

Lesson: the PTC taste test, and why the textbook version is wrong

BiologyGeneticsStatistics Age 13+ Intermediate PDF

A ready-to-run genetics lesson built on the PTC taste test — free to use in any school, college or university. Forty minutes, one paper strip, and the textbook version of the trait turns out to be wrong in a way that is more interesting than the original.
